The Story Behind the Artwork

Some people don't just run races — they rewrite what humanity believes is possible. Eliud Kipchoge is one of those people. On October 12, 2019, he stood at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna and did what the world said couldn't be done — he ran a marathon in under two hours. Not as a record, but as a statement: No human is limited. That moment stayed with me. And eventually, the only way I knew how to honour it was to pick up a pencil. On Saturday, 24th July 2021, I had drawn 90 per cent of the portrait of this great man — not from obligation, but from genuine admiration. I wanted to capture not just his face, but the quiet, almost serene confidence that defines him. The kind of smile that has crossed finish lines and broken records, yet somehow remains humble. I focused heavily on detailing — the wrinkles around his eyes, the texture of his skin, the warmth in his expression. For me, this piece was a study in realism. I wanted to understand how fine detailing transforms a drawing into something that feels alive, and with Kipchoge's face, I could already feel it happening. The forehead and parts of the neck were still awaiting their final details when life called me in another direction, and I had to set the piece down. It remains unfinished in the technical sense — but in spirit, it says everything I wanted it to say. I framed it in a wooden frame I built myself and mounted it on a stand I crafted from bamboo branches. Even as a work in progress, it felt right to give it that dignity — because the man it portrays has never done anything halfway.
